Similar to level dioramas, working your ideas in 3D can reveal so much more than a conventional 2D concept ever could, particularly for level designing & composition. Quite often, I will use a 3D block-out and then follow up with a 2D paint-over. The 2 techniques are a very powerful means to get across your ideas quickly and efficiently to a wide range of people. It's also a lot of fun.
It is important to consider function and form early before committing to an expensive oversight later down the production line.
